Have you ever wondered what it means to be a Christian, really considered what it entails, could you recognize one if you saw one? Better yet is the risen Christ formed in you? When you look in the mirror, go about your daily tasks, mingle with other people, do you portray Christ? You know the old saying ” If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, walks like a duck, then it must be a duck!”
Let us look at some characteristics that are proof that we are indeed portraying the living Christ. Simply put if we are Christians then we are followers of the teachings and actions of Jesus Christ. The Britannica World Language Edition of Funk & Wagnalls New Practical Standard Dictionary states it like this, “A Christian’ means a disciple of Jesus Christ; one whose profession and life conform to the teaching and example of Christ.” Andrew Murray in his book entitled ” In Christ” claimed, ” The fruit of a life in Christ is a life like Christ.”
Did you know that just going to church or fellowship does’nt neccesarily make you Christ like. It is a relationship with the living Lord of Lords (ie-Jesus Christ) that sets you on the journey of becoming Christ like. W.A. “Billy” Sunday the evangelist put it like this, ” Going to church does’nt make you a Christian anymore than going to a garage makes you an automobile.” And Justin Martyr stated, “Let it be understood that those who are not living by Christ’s teachings are not Christians at all – even though they might profess His teachings with their lips.”
Let us look at some of the main characteristics of a Christ like life.
I. True Christians love and have a relationship with Jesus Christ and are not ashamed to say so anywhere and in any situation. Saint Bernard said, ” The true measure of loving God is to love him without measure.”
II. True Christians will act with love towards all mankind, including their enemies and hating no human being. Andrew Murray claimed that, “To be a Christian just means to have the Spirit of Christ, to have His love, and to have been made by Him a fountain of love, springing up and flowering out in streams of living water.”
II. True Christians will adhere to the teachings of Jesus Christ and do them, not just hear them. Herrick Johnson stated, The devotion to the person of Christ that steers clear of the doctrine and precepts of Christ, is but sentimental rhapsody.”
Brethren let us be about our Fathers business, even as our Lord and savior Jesus Christ has led by example. Jesus promised that he would not leave us without the ability to live a life that was Christ like, just trust Him. He sent the promise of the Father to be in you and with you to remind you all things that concern being Christ Like. Let us put aside the things that hold us back. Christ Likeness is the goal and you can do it, yes you can.
With much love to you brethren.
